Veterinary Assistants
Veterinary assistants are not required to have formal training or a college degree. Their duties include assisting the doctor and/or veterinary technician, daily care of hospitalized patients, assisting in the exam rooms, and cleaning and maintenance of the facility and equipment. Responsibilities include scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, checking in clients, preparation and maintenance of medical records, filling prescriptions, over the counter sales, mailings, filing, and using the veterinary computer software. Receptionists will assume the responsibility for acquiring the medical and legal information necessary for the medical care of the patients (pets).
Veterinary Technicians
Veterinary technicians have either completed a two or four year college degree at an accredited veterinary technician school or have passed a nationally approved test after working in a veterinary hospital for two years. Technicians are responsible for hospital maintenance, assisting the doctors, laboratory procedures, radiology, anesthesia, client communication, medical procedures, filling pharmacy medications, operation and maintenance of instruments and surgical equipment, inventory, and daily treatment of hospitalized patients
